This is going to be a great term. I know it! Last week was REALLY intense. I thought it was going to be ok. to take two (one-week) intensive courses at the same time but I was wrong. I did not even have time to do my weekly posting... I barely had time to sleep due to the work load but it was a good week though. Have you ever felt that even though you are really busy you really enjoy yourself? Well that was my case :-)

I took Alternative Investment and Wealth Management subjects and I felt I just learnt tones. I wish school offered both in a regular term! Cause the subjects are really rich and can get complex (at least for some of us that were not really into investments). From a pragmatic point of view, both subjects gave me interesting insights on how to build and evaluate the composition of an investment portfolio given an objective. Two of the concepts that caught my attention were risk arbitrage and behavioral finance. Anyways, I hope I can make some time to continue reading and learning about this. Now that the fifth term begins, these are the subjects I am going to take:

1. Venture Capital & Private Equity
2. Estrategias Bancarias en el SXXI (Banking Strategies in the 21st century)
3. New Statement of Cash Flows and its Impact on the Use of Financial Statements
4. Comparative Corporate Governance and Responsibility
5. Negotiation
6. Project Management

It is incredibly refreshing coming back to B-school. The fact of being part of such international class and -most specially- the opportunity of exchanging ideas with such gifted colleagues is truly enriching. I am really happy of being here, and even if it sounds a little bit nerdy, this is going to be fun. I can tell! :-)


Definitivamente este será un gran ciclo, lo sé! La semana pasada fue realmente intensa. Pensé que iba a estar de lo más normal tomar dos cursos intensivos al mismo tiempo pero me equivoqué. Ni siquiera tuve tiempo de escribir mi post semanal... apenas tuve tiempo para dormir debido a la cantidad de trabajo, pero fue una buena semana. ¿Alguna vez haz sentido que a pesar de estar súper cansada(o) al tope de paper work, aún así te diviertes? Bueno, ese fue mi caso :-)

Los intensivos que tomé fueron Wealth Management (Gestión de Patrimonios) y Alternative Investments (Inversiones Alternativas). Ambos cursos se me hicieron súper interesantes, aunque a momentos bastante complejos (desde la perspectiva de alguien que nunca ha trabajado en inversiones). Desde el punto de vista práctico, tanto Wealth Management como Alternative Investments, te dan una buena idea de cómo construir y evaluar un portafolio de inversiones. Me llamaron mucho la atención dos conceptos nuevos: risk arbitrage (arbitraje de riesgo) y behavioral finance (finanzas del comportamiento). En fin, tantas cosas! Espero encontrar tiempo para seguir leyendo al respecto. 

Ahora que el quinto ciclo ha comenzado, estos son los cursos que tomaré:

1. Venture Capital & Private Equity

Es realmente refrescante volver a clases. El hecho de ser parte de una clase tan diversa y sobretodo de compartir discusiones con gente tan talentosa motiva y hace único cada día. Me alegra muchísimo estar aquí y aunque suena medio nerdy, puedo asegurar que este ciclo será divertido! :-)

Cómo reducir nuestro impacto ambiental (desde casa!)

Me atrevería a decir que -de donde vengo- la gente tiene un poco menos de conciencia ambiental. Sin embargo, no creo que esto se deba a un descuido de nuestra parte, más bien está relacionado al hecho de que nuestra sociedad tuvo que vivir muchos años preocupada por alcanzar otras necesidades más inmediatas y básicas; de esta forma la preocupación por el medio ambiente pasó a un segundo plano.

Se puede observar que a medida que el país progresa en términos económicos, las personas han empezado a preocuparse más por reciclar y por reducir el consumo energético y, aunque hace ya algún tiempo que vivo fuera de Perú, puedo decir con seguridad que las cosas han ido mejorando en este aspecto. Uno podría pensar que el propio esfuerzo no es suficiente para lograr un cambio, pero ¿no es cierto acaso que la suma de muchos "pocos" hacen un "gran" total?

Hay muchas formas sabias y sencillas de reducir la contaminación que generamos. Aquí algunas ideas que podemos poner en práctica:

1. Desenchufar los aparatos eléctricos que no estemos utilizando. Por ejemplo: el cargador del móvil, de la laptop, la cafetera, etc.
2. Apagar las luces de las habitaciones que no estemos ocupando
3. Consumir la menor cantidad de productos descartables, especialmente cuando organizamos fiestas o reuniones!
4. Reutilizar y reciclar plásticos. Por ejemplo los que vienen con los productos envasados que compramos  
5. No imprimir cuando no es necesario. O si lo hacemos, tratar de emplear la menor cantidad de hojas posible
6. Llevar las baterías usadas o aparatos obsoletos a lugares de reciclaje, ¡sobretodo ahora que la gente cambia de móvil, portátil (...) tan rápido!

¡En fin! Podría seguir con una lista infinita, pero creo que esto es lo básico. También podríamos reducir deshechos desde la cocina, pero ese sería tema de otro post. Finalmente, para quienes pasamos gran parte de nuestro día fuera de casa (en la escuela o la oficina), ¿no creen que el agua y el café incluso podrían tener mejor sabor en tazas o botellas reutilizables? Think it over! ;-)

¡A ser más amables con la naturaleza se ha dicho!

I would say that where I come from, people tend to be a little less environmentally conscious. But don't think this is because we are careless people, I think it is one consequence of having had to meet other immediate and basic needs before. That is why concerns about the environment were moved to the background.

One could see that as our country progressed economically, people started to care more about recycling and reducing energy consumption; and although I have been living abroad for a while, I'm sure things have improved in this respect. We could think that our individual effort is too little to be important, but can’t small parts make a big total?.

Here are some easy and wise ways to become more environmentally friendly (right away from home!):

• Unplug appliances we are not using. For instance: mobile phone charger, laptop, coffee maker
• Turn off the lights in rooms that are not occupied
• Consume the least amount of disposable products, especially when organizing parties!
• Reuse and recycle plastics. For example, those which come packing products we buy at the supermarket
• Do not print when not needed. Or if we have to do it, we can always use the least possible number of leaves (printing on both sides or multiple pages in one side)
• Bring used batteries or obsolete electrical appliances to recycling places, especially now that people change mobile or portable so often!

To sum up, there may be a million ways to reduce the pollution we generate. These are just a few simple ways to do it. Finally, for we that spent many hours out home (either at school or at the office), why not using reusable cups or bottles when drinking coffeee or water? :)

Sobre cómo volver a la rutina y no morir en el intento

¿Quién dijo que la rutina es aburrida? Yo creo que quien lo diga se equivoca completamente. Pienso que el hecho de repetir las mismas actividades cada día no tiene nada de malo; la rutina nos permite perfeccionarnos en lo que hacemos, aprender de nuestros errores, conocer mejor a las personas con las que interactuamos y mejorar en el trato con ellas... La rutina nos da la preciada estabilidad ¡que no es lo mismo que inercia!, y nos da la oportunidad de valorar más los momentos en los que la interrumpimos para tomar un descanso.

Si bien mis clases empiezan la próxima semana, he planificado ésta con generosas horas de trabajo y estudio para una mejor transición. Luego de un merecido descanso puedo decir que el resultado es muy positivo, vuelvo a mi quinto y último term con energía y con muchos planes. Y definitivamente creo que las 4 cosas que me ayudan a volver a la cotidianidad sin morir en el intento son:

1. El hecho de tomar unas vacaciones adecuadas, que permitan descansar y reflexionar. Aunque al principio nos apetezca, no se trata de dormir todo el tiempo, ¡ni de llenar todos los espacios libres en la agenda! Dormir más ¿por qué no?, pero también realizar actividades que disfrutemos, que nos permitan aprender algo nuevo. Y sobretodo dejar tiempo para reflexionar sobre nuestro propio rumbo, ver con más perspectiva ¿dónde estamos? ¿qué queremos lograr? ¿qué podemos hacer mejor para lograrlo? 
2. Organizar la transición entre el final de las vacaciones y el inicio de la rutina. Recuerdo que una vez tomé unas vacaciones para viajar y no se me ocurrió mejor idea que volver a casa el día anterior a mi reincorporación al trabajo. Craso error. Aunque no había cambiado de zona horaria, ni me había cansado hasta el agotamiento, me arrepentí un millón de veces por no haber dejado al menos un par de días para deshacer maletas, organizar la lavandería y respirar la tranquilidad de estar en casa. Esa experiencia hizo que las próximas veces planeara mejor y que la reincorporación a la rutina sea más placentera. 
3. Planificar el regreso, organizar la agenda. Lo bueno de dejar unos días para la transición es que podemos aprovecharlos para organizar la agenda, ver si hay algún pendiente y organizar las prioridades.
4. Hacer un horario. Esto es algo que había dejado de practicar, a pesar de ser amante de las listas y de mi agenda, reconozco que no hay nada mejor que tener un horario para trabajar más eficaz y eficientemente. Alguna vez alguien me dijo que uno no puede decir que es flexible hasta que no ha logrado la disciplina de ser amo y señor de su propio tiempo.

Al final, otra de las cosas buenas de volver a la rutina es que cada vez quedará menos tiempo para las siguientes vacaciones. ¡Feliz semana!

Who said that routine is boring? I think those who sustain that are completely wrong. The routine allows us to improve ourselves in what we do, learn from our mistakes, learn more about the people we deal with... The routine gives us stability, which is not the same as inertia, and also gives us the opportunity to appreciate more the time when the stop to take a break.

While my classes start next week, I have planned this with generous hours of work and study for a better transition. After a short break I can say that the result is very positive, I return to my fifth and final term with energy and many plans. And I definitely think that the things that help to return to daily life without dying in the attempt are:

1. To take a restful vacation that also allows us to meditate. It is not about sleeping all the time or filling all the gaps on the agenda. Sleep more, why not?, But also do things that we enjoy and that allow us to learn something new. And most important leave some time to think over where are we? What we want to achieve? What can we do better?
2. Arrange the transition between the end of the holidays and the beginning of the work. I remember once I took a vacation to travel around and then I could not think a better idea than going back home the day before going back to work. Huge mistake. Although there was no time zone change neither I was tired to exhaustion, I regretted a million times for not having leaved -at least- a couple of days to unpack suitcases, do laundry and breathe the tranquility of being home. That experience led to think more carefully when planning holidays.
3. Plan the way back, set the agenda. The good thing about leaving a few days for an smooth transition is that we can use them to organize your calendar, see if there are any pending issues and organize priorities.
4. Make a schedule. This is something I had stopped practicing, despite being a lover of lists and my calendar, I recognize that there is nothing better than having a schedule to work more efficiently and effectively. Once someone told me that one can not say he is flexible until having the discipline to be master of his own time.

Finally, another good thing about getting back to routine is that every day will count less for our next holiday. Happy week!

5 gadgets relevantes para estudiantes (de MBA)

Han pasado 18 meses y poco más desde mi vuelta a las aulas y, como en toda nueva empresa, tuve que pasar por un período de adaptación hasta poder tomar un poco de 'forma'. No obstante, pienso que una de las cosas más complicadas del MBA no es volver a las aulas en sí y retomar el ritmo de estudio, sino el hecho de tener que conciliar diversas actividades como: clases, clubes, job hunting, vida social, un poco de deporte, entre otros.

¡Felizmente existe la tecnología! Así, entre los principales gadgets o herramientas que pueden ayudar a realizar mejor nuestro trabajo y a organizarnos mencionaría:

1. Un ordenador portátil, por conveniencia. En algún momento fue un lujo, ahora es una necesidad. 
2. Un smartphone, no sólo para hacer llamadas, navegar por internet (entre otros propósitos), sino por la mensajería instantánea. ¡Larga vida al Whatsapp! Si no fuera por él, quién sabe hasta dónde llegarían mis facturas de teléfono, con tantas cosas que coordinar...
3. Una calculadora científica. Si bien el computador y el smartphone deberían ser suficientes para realizar cálculos, es práctica común en las escuelas que no se permita su uso durante exámenes, por ello una calculadora científica es esencial, aunque no tuviésemos ni un gadget más.
4. Un Kindle u otro dispositivo de lectura electrónica. En lo personal, solo conozco el funcionamiento del Kindle y lo que me encanta de este apartito es el hecho de que su pantalla no brille (y por consiguiente no dañe ni moleste la visión), su capacidad de almacenamiento y su ligereza (lo que equivale a decir que puedes cargar con tu biblioteca a todas partes). 
5. Una tablet. Yo diría que esta última es la más prescindible, pero a su favor tiene que es más ligera de transportar que un ordenador y el sinnúmero de aplicaciones útiles. Hace poco descubrí Bamboo Paper, una aplicación que permite tomar notas manuales, subrayar archivos PDF, etc. Con un programa así, uno puede olvidarse de las toneladas de anotaciones físicas, que muchas veces tenemos que botar por falta de espacio.

Finalmente, yo no diría que estos ítems son imprescindibles para vivir o para ser un buen estudiante de MBA. Hay mucha gente que hace grandes cosas con poco o mucho menos. Sin embargo, es cierto que el uso de tecnología nos facilita la vida.

It has been 18 months and few more days since my return to the 'classroom'; and like in any new business, I had to go through an adjustment period until I got into 'shape'. However, I think one of the hardest part of being a MBA student is not returning to classes itself and catching up the pace of study, but having to reconcile various activities such as classes, clubs, job hunting, social life, sports, or whichever else activity one may decide.

Thank goodness, technology is there to help us in our daily lives. Thus, among the most useful gadgets for a MBA student, I would definitely mention:

1. A laptop, for convenience and for almost everything. Even though it used to be a luxury, now it has become a necessity for studying, for researching, for typing, for storing, for entertaining and for infinite purposes.
2. A smartphone, not only to make phone calls and to use internet, but to use instant messaging. Long live the Whatsapp! If not for it, who knows where my my phone bills would have ended.
3. A scientific calculator. While the computer and the smartphone should be sufficient to make calculations, it is common practice in schools to forbid their use during exams, so a scientific calculator becomes a must.
4. A Kindle or other electronic reading device. Personally, I only know the way Kindle works and what I love about it is the paper-white display that offers great contrast for a good reading, the storage capacity and its lightness (which allows you to take your whole library everywhere).
5. A tablet. I would among these 5 gadgets, this is the most expendable one. Nevertheless, in its favor we can count the fact of been lighter than a laptop and the huge availability of powerful applications. I recently discovered Bamboo Paper, an application that allows to take handwritten notes, highlight PDF files, etc... Thus, forget about having tons of physical notebooks that sooner or later end up in the trash can.

Finally, I would not say that such items are essential. There are many people doing great things with little or much less. However, it is true that the use of technology can save us time, help us to organize, lighten the purse or backpack on our daily way to school or home, etc.

10 resoluciones populares para empezar el año

Es el primer día del año. Un nuevo comienzo, un nuevo calendario, una libreta que se abre ante nosotros con todas sus páginas limpias, ¡al fin! No existe momento más propicio para iniciar una "nueva vida". Durante las últimas semanas, algunos hemos dedicado algún tiempo a pensar en nuestros objetivos para el nuevo año... Y más aún, revistas y páginas web dedican editoriales y secciones enteras a las resoluciones más populares durante estas fiestas.

No tuve que dedicar mucho tiempo para comprobar que tales listas dicen lo mismo. Al parecer, (casi) todos los seres humanos, con nuestras complejidades y particularidades, deseamos:

1. Hacer ejercicio y perder peso
2. Dejar de fumar
3. Aprender algo nuevo
4. Comer más saludable
5. Pagar deudas y ahorrar
6. Pasar más tiempo con la familia
7. Viajar a lugares nuevos
8. Estresarse menos
9. Trabajar de voluntario
10. Beber menos

Cada resolución es bastante encomiable. Pero yo me pregunto, ¿cuál será el ratio de éxito en cada una? A pesar de que no tengo data a mano para comprobar si dichas listas caen o no en el saco del olvido, me aventuro a decir, en base a mi propia experiencia y observación, que se cumplen muy poco y pienso que eso se puede deber a tres causas principalmente:

1. Tendemos a hacer listas genéricas y largas, en vez de plantearnos pocas cosas concretas y realistas. Genérico: bajar de peso vs. Concreto: bajar dos kilos cada mes (durante x meses) 
2. Dedicamos la mayor parte de nuestro tiempo a pensar en el ¿qué queremos lograr? más que en el ¿cómo lo vamos a lograr? Ejemplo: ¿Qué? Bajar de peso dos kilos cada mes (durante x meses); ¿Cómo? Con un plan de ejercicios en el gimnasio (x veces a la semana).
3. No revisamos los objetivos periódicamente. Seamos sinceros, nos tomamos nuestro tiempo para pensar, escribimos nuestra lista de resoluciones pero no la volvemos a mirar sino hasta ¿nunca? En este aspecto, sería interesante incluir como objetivo revisar nuestra lista con cierta periodicidad. Ahora, si nuestra lista se encuentra plasmada en un papelito anónimo, sería buena idea ir digitalizándola (en el teléfono móvil, tablet, etc.) o copiándola en el moleskine...

Yo tengo mi lista personalizada. Vamos a ver cómo nos va :-) Ahora viene a mi mente un plan de incentivos o de ajustes periódicos... Los detalles dependen de cada uno.

This is the first day of the year. A new beginning, a new calendar, a notepad that opens its white pages in front of us. There is no better time to start again like today. In the past few weeks, some of us have spent some time thinking and re-thinking about our ultimate goals for the new year. And yet, magazines and websites devoted entire sections to publish the "X" top resolutions during the holidays.

I did not have to spend much time to conclude that such lists say all the same. Apparently, (almost) all human beings, with our complexities and particularities, want to:

1. Work out and lose weight
2. Quit smoking
3. Learn something new
4. Eat healthier
5. Get out of debt and save money:
6. Spend more time with family
7. Travel to new places
8. Be less stressed
9. Volunteer
10. Drink less

Each resolution is quite commendable. But I wonder, what is their ratio of success? Although I have no data to determine whether or not these lists fall into the "oblivion bag", I venture to say, based on my experience and observations, that the foresaid ratio should be very little and this may be due to three reasons:

1. We tend to make long generic lists, rather than set few concrete and realistic goals. Generic: to lose weight vs. Concrete: to lose four pounds every month (during x months)
2. We spend a lot of time thinking about what we want to achieve? rather than thinking how we will achieve it? Example: What? Losing weight, two kilos each month (during x months), how? With a fitness plan (attending gym x times a week).
3. We do not review our goals periodically. Let's face it, we take our time to think, to write down our resolutions but, do we look back at those lists? In this regard, it would be helpful to include as an objective the periodic review of our resolution list. Now, if your list is written in an anonymous piece of paper, it is time to digitalize it (in a cellphone, tablet, etc...) or to copy/paste it in a moleskine.

I already have my customized list. Let's see how it goes :-) Now comes to my mind an incentive plan or periodic adjustments. The details are up to you!
